Before you order one rail
Why a small railing order gets quoted so much freight
An 8-foot cedar rail cannot travel by parcel. It goes on a freight truck, and a freight truck costs roughly the same whether it carries four pieces or forty.
So if you price a single rail, the delivery number you see is the worst possible version of the truth. It is not a mistake and it is not us marking it up. It is what one stick on a truck costs. Order the run in one go and that same cost spreads across the whole job.

Getting the numbers right
The four things people ask us
Spindle spacing
Most codes want a 4-inch sphere not to pass between spindles. With 3-inch round spindles that puts you around 7 inches on center. The planner does this for you, and tells you why it landed where it did.
Posts
Posts carry the run, so they drive the parts list more than the rails do. Corners and stair transitions both need one.
Stairs
Stair sections use a shorter spindle than flat runs. We stock 26-inch for stairs and 29-inch for level runs.
Finish
Cedar left bare will gray. If you want it to stay close to the color it arrives in, plan on a finish. Ours are in Exterior Stains and Top Coats.
